medicine: malaria - scourge on humanity

Today, April 25th 2009, is World Malaria Day. Malaria has probably been killing humans since ancient times. It is documented to have changed the course of history and the outcome of battles. At one time malaria was present in the southern parts of Europe, but is now found mostly in countries in the tropical zone. The present day effects of malaria are also too real, and has an impact on economies that are least able to absorb the blow. According to a WHO document, in 2000, if malaria had been eradicated from Africa 35 years ago the economy of Africa would be improved by $100 billion dollars annually (with an annual GDP of $300 billion, this is a big impact). For the extremely poor countries of Africa this would make a huge difference in quality of life. According to the World Health Organization, In 2005 Malaria killed more than 850,000 children – triple the amount of children AIDS kills. Overall, Malaria is estimated to kill between 1.5 and 2.7 million people annually (this is a slightly higher than the estimate given for AIDS relateddeaths).

medicine: Snake Bites

“Reptiles are abhorrent because of their cold body, pale color, cartilaginous skeleton, filthy skin, fierce aspect, calculating eye, offensive smell, harsh voice, squalid habitation, and terrible venom; wherefore their Creator has not exerted his powers to make many of them.”
–Linnaeus, 1797; Also the opening quote in Jurassic Park.

Much controversy has surrounded the recent death of a young child following a snake bite. My brother wants me to add my two cents to the story - hence this post.

medicine: surgery in ancient egypt was very advanced

Surgical and medical techniques in Egypt 3700 years ago were very advanced and scientific (that's a LONG time back .. hundreds of generations). They knew about immobilization, about looking for a pulse, antiseptics, anasthetics, they even knew that when you have a fever that you should take antibiotics (which they correctly identified). Evidence of this can be found in an ancient papyrus fragment, which was probably authored by Imhotep. Out of the 45 treatments we see, in only one treatment case do they add a call to divine forces (the ninth case). That case is severe head trauma ...

fitness: should one eat before exercising?

i used to work at power world as an instructor - back in 1996... something we were instructed to do was to advice clients to have a pre-exercise snack about an hour or two before their workouts... recently i had a small argument with a bunch of doctors who said there is no bio-chemical basis for that claim... and that one can lose more fat stored in their body if they exercised hungry...
